Introduction

CaptionOla is a little utility program I wrote at the request of a family member. It allows the user to add caption text to a picture. The text appears in a small white border added to the bottom of the image. This might be useful if you wish to print the picture or use it in a slideshow. The original picture file is not altered.

CaptionOla works with these picture file formats:

Requirements, Installation, and Usage

CaptionOla requires a fairly modern installation of Java; version 1.5.0 or later. You can get that at java.com. Note that the current version of captionOla doesn't run on Mac OS X 10.3.x (Panther), since the OS doesn't support Java 1.5.

To download CaptionOla, follow this link. CaptionOla is written in Java, and so runs on Windows, Mac, Linux, Solaris, and others. Windows users may choose to put it in their "My Pictures" folder, while Mac users might want it in the "Pictures" folder. Or drag captionola.jar to your Start Menu/Dock.

Using CaptionOla is easy! To run the program, just double-click on the captionola.jar file. Or, from a command line, type java -jar captionola.jar. A window will open that allows the user to follow the 3 steps necessary to add a caption to an image.

STEP 1: select an image file to work with
STEP 2: enter the text for the caption
STEP 3: save the new picture

For example, suppose the folks at NASA wished to add a caption to one of the images sent back from the Mars Rover...
